About this converter
PDFs get too big for the place they need to go — a form with a 5 MB cap, an email that bounces, a portal that refuses anything over 2 MB. There is no way to shrink one built into Windows or macOS, which is why this is usually the point people go looking.
The safe option repacks the file and strips out the hidden information it carries around, leaving every word selectable and searchable. On a document that was already saved efficiently it may barely change anything, and the result will say what it managed.
The aggressive option turns each page into a picture. That shrinks a scanned document enormously — often by ninety percent — but the text stops being text: you will not be able to select it, search it or copy from it afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Which option should I pick?
Start with "keep the text". If the file is still too big and it is mostly scans or photographs, switch to the other one — you will lose the ability to select text, but the file gets dramatically smaller.
Why did nothing happen?
The file was already about as small as it gets. Most of the weight in a PDF is its pictures, so one that is mostly text has little to give up.
Will it still print properly?
Yes. Pages keep their original dimensions either way, so it prints at the size it was designed for.
Do my PDFs get sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens on your own device, so your documents never leave it. That matters more than usual for PDFs, which tend to be contracts, statements and scans.
Does it work with password-protected files?
Not yet. A protected PDF has to be unlocked with its password first.
