BMP is an uncompressed Windows bitmap format producing very large files, still common in legacy software. WebP is Google's format offering roughly 25-35% smaller files than JPG at comparable quality, with transparency and animation support.
BMP files are uncompressed, which is why they are enormous — a photograph can run to tens of megabytes. Converting BMP to WebP usually happens because something old produced the file and everything modern is choking on its size.

Will converting to WebP reduce the image quality?
